Dope The Hope

Just in: Honorable BSP MP says women and children don’t need mobile phones. The mobile phones are distracting women.
I didn't know that mobiles can also anticipate whether its owner is a man/woman/children that it would distract only the latter two and would help former become a saint. I am sure, in that a case; even mobile is an  invention of chauvinistic india. (Purposely used i and not I, it does make a difference).

Then comes: Rapes are happening because men and women these days interact more freely, says WB CM Mamata Banerjee
Must inform your guardian Ms. Banerjee, for our very PM, a silent spectator but male, gets frightened when you interact with him.

Ultimate: Haryana khap blames consumption of chowmein for rapes
Ahhhh..! What a marvelous discovery. Sir John B. Gurdon and Shinya Yamanaka must step down as Nobel Prize winners in Physiology and Medicine for our well deserving Haranaya khaps and their chutzpah .!! But before that, what’s up with Chinese for whom chowmein is equivalent to our panipuris?

And there were plethora of such news I went on laughing at.

A midst these nonsense headlines, I came across a very interesting article - the government is planning to get a bill passed for paying the housewives.  Impressed by the egalitarian move of the government, I went through the vignette and repartee of this bill. To admit, I had never thought that a housewife is as good as a manager of a corporate world. I wondered that this indeed would a wise step to give a tribute to those ladies to are the first to wake up in the morning and last to go to the bed and yet are considered sitting idly at home.

But then, while coming back to my home via metro, I overheard two gentlemen pondering over the same tragic above mentioned issues of the country. One of them claimed, “These girls are known since ages in messing up stuffs. Look here only, when that there is a reserved bogie for ladies, why do they need to board the general compartments? Men should also have their separate bogies.”

I was aghast. I wondered if this is the world we really are trying to build up? Train of thoughts started running in my mind. Just imagine, separate bogies in trains, buses  separate markets and institutions for girls and boys; imagine the company you are working in having two branches situated back to back – one for males, the other for females; and then the earth divided into two halves – east for the Venus and west for the Mars.

This is definitely not what we want. These reservations are to unite the human races, not to separate them. With a valid intention, it’s spreading a wrong message. All we want is respect, not complex; all we wish to be is partners, not subordinates.

Regalia is one thing, rapture another
Splendor is one thing, spirit another

Now imagine if this bill is passed, will it bring peace in the family? The bill will definitely make the sweat and toil of a homemaker legal, but would it make it legitimate? Our society is already losing its sentience.  Will they accept the status of nouveau riche women?

I doubt. Actually, I am more worried if this Act would be acceptable by our Indian women themselves? Will they really demand money from their sacrosanct husbands? And what about those rural women where the soul of India resides and where women work to run the family of an unfortunate unemployed husband? And how will the govt pay justice to those women who are struggling day in and day out and from pillar to post having lost their husbands in the battle of life? Happy that I was, now I am afraid it would be a faux pa.

A woman doesn't want all these. All she wants and deserves is that appreciation and love in return. A homemaker converts a house of bricks to a home. All she wants in return is a space of dignity in the home she considers her own. This bill might give her share in salary; but will it guarantee her share in the hearts? At worse, what if tomorrow they are considered as servants and not homemakers? It’s not the rights that make you human, it’s your duties.

But let us see this -

A life where there is love is often messy. Life without love is no doubt neater, but neatness is really only preferable in bathrooms and written reports. Singing alone is definitely easier and certainly less complicated than singing with someone else, but there is nothing quite damn satisfying as creating even one moment of real beauty echoing gracefully with another. Agreed, perhaps to find the beauty more often and to have these moments of echoing in superb alignment with each other and with the music that guides us, we need to let go off our ideas of what the song should seem like, and let the messiness of love guide us. Probably women are put on earth a little space that they might learn o bear the beams of love.

In a nutshell, change in a small thought of yours will change the lives of your better halves..!!

A mother cannot be repaid for the sacrifices she has done for her child nor can a wife be, and she is not doing for anyone but herself. All she wants is a tight hug, no paramount position but a sense of belonging  The same goes with a girl – we don’t need a separate bogie, all we need is a distinct dignity; that even we EXIST.

Is it that tough ?

  1. I guess its just that those with power want to have SOME solution , not take time to find the effective solution. We shouldn't let them forget that they are our representative, we have chosen them to maintain our dignity , not just crush self-respect or dignity of females in the name of security or the reason behind all the evil-doings. We can't let the narrowed or sick mentality of some people dictate our lives.

  2. Its a shame that now Government is considering salary for housewives from husbands. The government can do far more for women by ensuring total female literacy, and enforcing existing laws against rape and domestic violence.

  3. 'chauvinistic india' is a completely ridiculous term used by the blogger which is nothing but gross exaggeration of the entire situation. People should ask that person why his views are like that before tagging him with adjectives like 'chauvinist' or 'Talibaani'. For god sake please stop generalising Indian Society with the same yardstick.

Coming towards your Metro story I was having a pretty interesting discussion with one of my friend who is born and brought up in Delhi over this article http://ibnlive.in.com/news/men-in-delhi-metro-womens-coaches-fined-rs-32-lakh/296882-3-244.html . He said imagine the penalty DMRC could have earned if they start checking the other way around. It will be just 3 to 4 times more. Being a Delhi Metro traveller from its introductory days I was quite convinced by his answer.

When there is a provision for separate coach for Females what is the need of entering the general compartment ? On the other hand the story is completely different here in Bangalore with BMTC Volvo Buses. There is no reserved area for women in these buses but they assume the low floor area of the bus is reserved for them. To make sure that men do not sit on these seats women put their handbags, backpaks and sometimes even their lunch bags on the adjoining seats just to make sure nobody asks them to move. Now when you move towards the upper area to look for a seat you will find women sitting on those seats with their colleagues as well. Now when you return back to the low floor to stake claim for the vacant seat they will remove their belongings with such a reluctance as if you are too desparate to sit with them.
In a nutshell when women are separated from the so called 'chauvinistic society' then there is a problem, when they are treated as equals then also they raise their eyebrows.

The act about which you have mentioned above if passed by the parliament is going to be nothing, but an another ammunition in the armory of the so called 'weaker gender' of the society. Which will be no ways different from the Dowry act or the Domestic Violence Bill which is grossly being misused to harass their better halfs and his family men.

The last few paras appeared to be too mellow dramatic. But realistically why only male society should change ? In a balanced way the blogger must have mentioned what all changes are needed in the female society as well. 'Taali hamesha dono haathon se bajti hai'.
Overall the blogger who is also a friend of mine has given her views which makes this entire Blog Post look like fundamentally feminist.

  4. Well written article... Though people might disagree with some of the points raised here, it is only because they have a very limited outlook of India - as India is not about Delhi & Bangalore and Metros & Volvos it is about towns & villages and local trains & dilapidated buses. However I'm happy that while there are molesters roaming free on road we have "The Lady with the Iron Rod"...

  5. A phenomenol article really. All an individual demands is respect and it is true for either sex. A few days ago was discussing the same with my friends regarding this and was of the same opinion that paying a housewife wont create a difference, rather it will create differences a male acting as a master or a boss and female being treated as a worker for which she is getting paid. If anything we as a patriachal society (which I am not a big believer of) can do to a women is to give them the respect they deserve but I am sure you would definitely agree that for that cooperation from women is also must. Women also need to feel strong enough to be self defiant on their own so that a male, for that matter any person has the guts to challenge her respect and integrity.

I like the way you say that love makes the place messier but clean things are to be kept to bathrooms, the article has satire, irony in it...A fabulous work undoubtedly Tulika

Can you elaborate a bit more?

  9. @aksforsure

There are hardly a few people who are concerned about Rural India. 'Female infanticide' which is one of the biggest sins done by the mankind is hardly ever discussed by any Blogger or any Public Forums. People are more interested in writing blogs and articles about molestations or alleged violences against women. As these articles contains masala but discussion on such crimes will be boring so it is never discussed.

  11. When I had started penning down in this field and read such sorta comments, I used to get really very angry (a human with errs that I am)..Every time I wished to be a guy so that whenever I raise my voice for such topics, people don't come up with the notion that "Tulika, you are saying 'coz you are a girl"..
Never, even for once, I have ever written any such article thinking that I am a girl..
But today I am not disgruntled..

Past a week I had been thinking about this issue until today I came across this article.

    http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-features/tp-openpage/how-much-will-you-pay-for-the-homemaker/article4018138.ece

I didn't write this article for sure, kudos to the lucrative writer. But yes, at the other corner of India (now the purpose of I is served), there is a person who did think about the basic sentiments ..and is a male..!! That the comments of Akhil does show, at least to me, that he thinks about HOME - neither a husband nor a wife. That when I read aksforsure's comment, I felt that there is a MALE who thinks about true India..same with Saransh

The last para seemed an emotional drag; for me it's that sanctity which is losing its fervor.. And I'll keep writing, not for those who think it's "masala" but for those who support me..!!

I am not a feminist, I am a rationalist.. for, my first article was on "Why shouldn't guys cry"... I fail to understand why guys, right from their birth, are taught not to cry..They are humans, and they do get hurt - they have heart too..!! If heart cries out, why shouldn't eyes..!!
But unfortunately I guess my pals weren't there to comment out their views..!!
Female Infanticide has been talked about here and other topics seemed rubbish..!! Tell me one thing, what's the point eradicating this social menace if rape, molestation, domestic violence exist. Read that case where the father hanged himself when he came to know that his daughter has been raped. Has anyone even thought for once, what would be going in her mind ? She lost her dignity, her father the society..!! Being a girl, I am saying that it's better that a girl doesn't take birth if she has to see these days..!! And so will any parent, coz that would be the only way to protect her - that better she doesn't exist..!! And trust me, it WOULD NOT be parents' fault, at all..!! But, this would be "mellow dramatic" and "boring"..!!

Nevertheless, I promise that if, God forbids, a day comes when a male is raped and his dignity is being questioned or when a male child is killed for the want of a female child or when a male widow is put on his dead wife's pyre, my articles will again take a turn, for them..!! Because it's not about tit for tat, it's about dignity, be it a male or a female..!!

    ReplyDelete
  12. And as has been claimed by Aman and Thejas, that's actually is my point..!! Legalizing laws doesn't make it legitimate..!! Now girls will misuse the Acts and powers, to take revenge or whatever that feeling is called.. Because even now, the true problem has not been eliminated..!! It's the public who needs to feel it, not the govt to pressurize ..!! Change comes within, not under force..!!
A painkiller eliminates the feel of pain, it does not kill the pain..!!
Think of solution, not grievances..!! Otherwise wahi hoga, dono taali bajao...and keep wondering what's happening with the society...!!

  14. Both People and Government should understand that Dowry act or rules like paying housewives doesn't solve the problem in family or harassment by both men and women. We should understand the family/relationships are not run by rules but by understanding between each other.

Though blogger's view appears to support only women, what we should understand that the blogger is actually against these kind of stupid RULES, not MEN.

Keep up the good work Aashi... All the best:)

@ Aman, about partition of space in bus/metro: If there is seat in women section, what is wrong in asking for seat. Why to worry about their reaction when that women is stranger to you. Just enjoy the strange company (Well if she is beautiful!!!)

  15. @Blogger

The so called lucrative writer has done nothing but written an illusive article to appease a large section of crowd. this article is as exaggerated as your blog post. Those were the days when new born kids used to rest their head on the shoulders of their mother and have a sound sleep. Now there is a Kangaroo Pouch just to make sure that the highly weighed head of the kid doesn't becomes burden on the shoulders of the mother eventhough she enjoys carrying a backpack wieghing 5-7 KGS on her shoulder but they don't such burdens mind as they are paid for that.
Then what is wrong in paying them for doing such a great duty of parenthood/ motherhood where they carry their kid in a
    Kangaroo Pouch.

My blogger friend is in an illusion that men are taught not to cry. As much as I remember I was not taught any such thing. Tears in the eyes of men are natural so they are rare But mostly tears in the eyes of the so called 'weaker geneder' is nothing more than a symbol of complain and there lies the difference.

If the blogger was a rationalist then she would have reacted to this article http://www.dnaindia.com/india/report_man-moves-court-against-wife-in-false-dowry-case_1248165

The blogger would have shred tears on articles like this http://www.indianexpress.com/news/take-action-against-girl-for-filing-false-rape-case-hc-to-cops/931412 where the future of the accused devil has been ruined. What sort of rationalism is this?

Chances of male infanticide is equally minimal and funny as male molestation is :P so there you can take an escape route.

With the last para of blogger I am just confused what does the blogger exactly wants change of thoughts or change in the act of the people (precisely men) ?

  16. Very nice Tulika.
I totally appreciate the effort and i would want to do my bit as well. Very nice article. We will have to together work to set things right else peoples' mentality would remain screwed up.
You have very beautifully described the various scenarios and the outcomes.
Keep up the good work and I would religiously want to follow this blog.
